Rova Live In-Person Concert!

Forthcoming Rova CD: The Circumference of Reason

Rova Member Projects

The Quartet is now successfully connecting remotely to rehearse in preparation for upcoming performances. Results improve each session, and, after a year’s public hiatus, the band is poised to present new and recent works to you. Very soon we’ll resume in-person rehearsals and will even play to a live audience in San Francisco in July. Upcoming events will also include rebroadcasts of archival material and streaming of a concert video we’ll create in early June for online viewing.

Rova on the Air Series Continues

Rova:Arts has initiated an ongoing monthly series, streaming shows from the Rova archives as well as newly recorded performances for virtual viewing. The series will continue as venues gradually reopen, enabling you to experience Rova music without leaving home. Many of the broadcasts will premiere on a Thursday at 7 PM Pacific Time and will be available throughout that weekend. For these, the Thursday broadcasts at 7 PM will be followed by live Q+A sessions with Rova members and you. As we expand the series to include more recent events, the format will vary. Currently scheduled events are FREE!

Rova on the Air 2: Orkestrova Live at the 2005 Tampere Jazz Happening

To view the video performance when it is streamed, follow this link: https://youtu.be/rpnHYJhhEaM
Recorded live at the Tampere Jazz Happening, Nov. 6, 2005 and produced by Timo Lehtinen for the Jazz Is Happening TV series and the Finnish Broadcasting Company.
The initial airing on Thursday, May 20 at 7PM PDT will be followed by a live Q+A with Rova. After that, the Finnish TV broadcast will be available for viewing through Sunday May 23.

Rova plus:
Natsuki Tamura - trumpet
Verneri Pohjola – trumpet
Ilmari Pohjola - trombone
Markku Veijonsuo - trombone
Satoko Fujii - piano
Antti Lötjönen - bass
Akira Horikoshi - drums

This concert was one of 3 festival appearances that Rova played in Europe with the trio of Satoko Fujii, Natsuki Tamura, and Akira Horikoshi in fall 2005. The big band music performed in Europe was originally written by Fujii and Steve Adams for a Rova:Arts produced concert in San Francisco in 2002, and later released on the CD, An Alligator in Your Wallet. On the tour we filled out the band with local musicians from Switzerland, France, and then Finland, and rehearsed the music together on the day of the concert. The results were fantastic, with all players getting right into the heart of the music.

This documentary, produced by the Finnish Broadcasting Company in 2006, includes 3 pieces in their entirety. Satoko’s “A Lion in Your Bag” is first and features Larry Ochs. Steve’s “Survival (in Five Acts)” follows, with solos by Verneri Pohjola, Ochs, Raskin and Adams. Last is Satoko’s “An Alligator in Your Wallet”, with a solo by Ackley followed by a trumpet duo by Verneri and Natsuki, and a trombone duo by Olmari and Markku. The video concludes with excerpts from Satoko’s “A Zebra on Your Roof” and Steve’s piece “Chuck”.

Rova on the Air 3: Carla Kihlstedt’s Pandæmonium

Rova commissioned Carla Kihlstedt for a work that she called Pandæmonium, which premiered at the Other Minds Festival 15 in 2010. Rova was joined by narrator-actors Matthias Bossi and Joan Mankin. Kihlstedt's inspiration and the texts used in the work came from the book, Pandæmonium: The Coming of the Machine as Seen by Contemporary Observers, 1660-1886 by Humphrey Jennings. All excerpts from the book were sourced from letters, articles, diaries, literature, and scientific studies about the industrial age, as experienced from 1660-1886.

The video recording of the 2010 show will stream all weekend, with a Q&A session live with Rova following the Thursday night screening.

The link for viewing will be sent separately closer to the date of the show, and listed at Rova.org.

duo B. Experimental Band 'Open Studio' Live Online Performance

on KFJC 89.7 FM, hosted by Max Level

The duo B. Experimental Band (dbXB), co-led by Bay Area improviser/composers Lisa Mezzacappa and Jason Levis, invites KFJC listeners into their online improvisation workshop, with a four-hour continuous performance showcasing compositions and structured improvisations by the ensemble's members, created specifically for making music in an online environment. Mezzacappa (bass) and Levis (drums) have been co-leading the large ensemble since December of 2018. In 2020, once Covid made rehearsing and performing in person impossible, dbXB moved online and has been convening weekly for community improvisation workshops. The ensemble uses software and a private server to connect the performers in (almost) real time.

The 18-piece lineup features a stellar lineup of Bay Area players, including Rovas Jon Raskin and Steve Adams.
